The ESI scheme is a social security and health insurance program designed to provide medical and financial benefits to employees and their dependents in case of sickness, maternity, disability, or death due to employment-related injuries.
Key Features of ESIC:
Medical Benefits – Free healthcare for employees and dependents at ESIC hospitals.
Sickness Benefits – Cash compensation up to 70% of salary for 91 days per year.
Maternity Benefits – Paid leave for female employees (26 weeks of maternity leave with full pay).
Disability Benefits – Monthly payments for temporary or permanent disability.
Dependents’ Benefits – Pension for family members in case of the employee’s death due to work injury.
Funeral Expenses – A lump sum amount for funeral costs.
Who Needs to Register Under ESIC?
Applicable to businesses with 10 or more employees (20 in some states).
Mandatory for employees earning up to ₹21,000 per month (₹25,000 for persons with disabilities).
Both employer & employee contribute to ESI.
