What Is Food Licence (FSSAI License)?

A Food License, commonly known as the FSSAI License, is a mandatory registration or certification issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to ensure that food businesses comply with hygiene and safety standards. It is required for all food-related businesses, including manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution, and sale of food products in India.

Types of FSSAI Licenses:

There are three types of food licenses based on the scale of business:

FSSAI Basic Registration (For Small Businesses)

Who Needs It? Small food businesses with an annual turnover of ₹0 – ₹12 lakhs.
Example: Home-based food businesses, small retailers, street vendors, small dairy units.

FSSAI State License (For Medium-Sized Businesses)

Who Needs It? Businesses with an annual turnover of ₹12 lakhs – ₹20 crores.
Example: Mid-sized restaurants, food manufacturers, storage units, transporters.

FSSAI Central License (For Large-Scale Businesses)

Who Needs It? Businesses with an annual turnover of above ₹20 crores or operating in multiple states.
Example: Large food manufacturers, exporters, importers, e-commerce food businesses, food chains (like Zomato, Swiggy, McDonald’s).

Documents Required for Food License:

  Basic Registration:

                            Aadhar Card / PAN Card of owner
                           Business name and address proof
 Passport-size photo
         Nature of food business

             State & Central License: 

                                                                  Company registration certificate (for Pvt Ltd / LLP)
                                    List of food products to be handled
                                                         Food Safety Management System (FSMS) plan
                              Water test report (if applicable)
                                  Import/export license (if required)
